The constant flux of national trends requires that we stay alert to the implications changes bring. Americased very differently than in years past. A few notes from the National Agricultural Statistics Service indicate shades of change0 38.8% of the labor force was in agriculture, and in 1990 it required only 1.7% to get the job done. Five million farms existed in 1900, and only two million in 1997. People now live primarily in populated areas and travel to enjoy the public lands of the West for recreation of all types.
Recreation and heritage tourism are issues that many American towns are focusing on and promoting as they adapt to new economies and interests of citizens with more leisure time. Elko County provides great landscapes, a history rich in ranching, mining and exploratory trails that opened the West, wonderful wildlife opportunities and vast areas of open space. Increasingly, the region is advertising their 71% public land as a year-round place to recreate.
In the 2001 Learning Community sessions held by NNSG, recreation was identified as a primary interest to pursue in the Elko area. In March of 2002, NNSG hosted a two-day Recreation Workshop, which 60 enthusiasts ranging from backcountry horsemen to heli-skiiers attended. NNSG continues to assist in providing diverse public land recreation experiences for our community and the visiting public.
